Our Vineyards...
We believe strongly that the exquisite qualities of our wines originate in our vineyards. Our fruit is nurtured by organic farming practices which focus on maintaining a healthy vineyard ecosystem. Our sites were selected for specific varietal characters and appropriately represent the Mendocino County, Redwood Valley appellation. Because we believe that great wine originates in the vineyard, we use only Estate grown fruit. This gives us the ability to maintain an intimate relationship with our fruit and allows us to adjust our farming practices whenever needed. We focus on achieving balanced growth among our vines, which we believe leads to a balanced mouthfeel in our wines. In order to achieve balanced growth among our vines, we focus on quality not quantity. The shallow and gravelly soils of Redwood Valley and our use of low vigor rootstocks and a selection of clones allow us to produce fruit with maximum flavor. These richer-flavored grapes, ultimately lead to high quality wine. Our Vineyard PhilosophyAt Oster Wine Cellars we are fascinated with the manner in which certain factors such as soil composition, microclimate, and geographic location affect the flavor profile of a wine. The unique combination of these factors in one vineyard is what we commonly refer to as "terroir." In order to properly allow the unique terroir of our vineyards to shine through in our wines, we use organic farming practices. This encourages balance, not only among vines but with the surrounding ecosystems as well. Year after year, our wines display some of the same aromas and flavors, the "personalities" of our vineyards, even while they carry the distinguishing marks of the particular vintage and our winemaking style.
